Alot of people hate Harry Potter. I'm not one of them. I thought the books were good and the films entertaining. Well, most of them anyway. The third one was pretty weak. Which was surprising because I considered it one of the strongest books and so I actually felt a little bit disappointed that it wasn't any good. The next film won't disappoint me at all though. Because the book was awful. And even Quentin Tarantino couldn't make it any good.
The reason the book was so bad was that nothing happened. The entire thing seemed to be Harry popping to Dumbledore's office for a quick chat, a cup of tea and a several rather extended glimpses into a bowl of water where we got to learn about Voldemort's (gasp!) sordid past. Oh what a naughty boy he was. However interesting discovering why Voldemort's such a mean-spirited bully may be (I'm putting it down to lack of sex...), it really doesn't advance the plot of our heroes. To quickly summarise what occurs that's actually of consequence to the story:
Voldemort comes back.
Dumbledore dies.
Everyone runs away.
The end.
The film is actually going to be three hours of watching Harry go about his day to day business, occasionally being interrupted by Dumbledore summoning him to his office and possibily by Ron fainting. Or something. About half the film will have to focus on what Harry sees from Voldemort's past and this is where the film can truely excel in it's dreadfulness. I was really hoping for a good actor to play young Voldemort. Someone really inherently evil who could truely grow up to be the most evil wizard in the world. Well, I've seen the trailer and the actor playing Voldemort is just, well, annoying at best. And an awful actor to boot. Now I'm a reasonable man and will reserve my final judgement for when I do actually see the film (which I will because we always go as a family to see the new film each year) but I can't help but expect the film to be bad when the few clips they show of young Voldemort are that badly acted.
PS. I retract my suggestion that Quentin Tarantino couldn't make this film good. We all know that's a blatant lie and it'd be awesome!
