Mr Owen! How could you?

More than one person I'd spoken to had raved about Children of Men. These were people whose film taste I respected. That was until I got round to watching it last night. Never again will I believe the lies that spill forth from their deceitful mouths.

The basic concept of the film was good and based on it I'll be grabbing a copy of the book in the hopes that it does the job a little bit better. But there were a couple of factors that brought the film crashing down. Firstly, the style was generally despressing. The style of what I'm not sure. It may have been the directing, the lighting or the type of lens used, but something was just amiss. The major flaw in the film though was the acting. Now I'm going to leave Clive Owen and Michael Cain out of this, because at the end of the day they are both actors who aren't hired because they can act, but because they both bring a touch of class to a film just by being themselves. Every other actor in the film however, well, they were just terrible. Each line made me feel just uncomfortable and if you so have the misfortune of seeing it, watch out for the American lass. My theory regarding her is that whichever beautiful actress was meant to play opposite Mr Owen was distracted on her way to the studio (by what, I'm not sure, maybe an offer for a better film. Narnia or something like that...) and in a rushed attempt to replace her , the director grabbed the nearest woman who looked like she could speak. Just.

I really wanted to like this film. Actually, correct that, I wanted to love it. And I didn't. Poor Clive Owen. Let's all go watch Shoot 'Em Up and remember how cool Clive Owen can be.

Sir, I can only assume that in your hungover state yesterday you were in no frame of mind to appreciate the bleak quality of CoM.

Don't you worry. I do intend to give it another shot as I really did want to like it. I'll write another entry on it when I do!
