I saw Slumdog Millionaire last night. Yes, I know I'm a little behind...
Hype isn't a good thing for a film. Naturally it raises expectations. And if any film's been hyped about, it's this one. With awards from the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, it really should be something special.
Slumdog is good. Don't get me wrong. And it's dark enough in places not just to be a feel-good romp. It's a film with substance and a message. Yet I'm really not sure it deserved the best picture prizes it's received. In fact I'm quite sure.
And it's star, Dev Patel, (Anwar from Skins to, well, pretty much everyone...) really didn't deserve a nomination for best male lead. Putting him in the same catagory as Brad Pitt, Heath Ledger, Sean Penn, well, it's just wrong after watching the film. I'm not saying he's bad in it. I'm just saying he's average.
Don't get me wrong, Slumdog's a must see. It's rather good. It's just not as good as everyone made out...
